A few things to know

Register

polite by default

Use polite 해요체 with hotel staff. You can usually leave out pronouns and get straight to the point. Staff may use slightly more formal words like 성함 when asking for your name, and short, direct questions are normal at the front desk.

grammar

Starting times with 부터

In 조식은 몇 시부터예요?, 부터 marks the starting point of a time period. That makes it the right choice when you want the opening time of a service. The answer can be just the start time, like 오전 7시부터예요.

usage

Softening requests with 좀

좀 often softens a request when it comes before 주세요 or 부탁드립니다. Compare 수건 좀 더 주세요 and 예약 확인 좀 부탁드립니다. Here it does not mean 'a little'; it mainly makes the request sound less abrupt.

usage

계산서 vs 영수증

계산서 주세요. asks for the bill amount before you pay. 영수증 주세요. asks for proof of payment after you pay. At checkout, hotels may give you one or both, so choose the one you need.

Try it yourself

Choose the right phrase

Pick what you would say in each situation.

Question 1 of 3

  1. Question 1
  2. Question 2
  3. Question 3
You have just arrived at the front desk and want the staff to look up your booking under your name. What should you say?
