나는 오늘 아침에 작은 섬으로 여행을 갔어요.

Notice the language
Attach -고 to a verb stem to connect two actions in one sentence. It often means "and" or "and then." In the story, "모자를 쓰고 산책을 시작했어요" shows two actions in order. You can reuse this pattern in many simple sentences, for example: "아침에 일어나고 물을 마셨어요."
모자를 쓰고 산책을 시작했어요.
I put on a hat and started walking.
