En una estación de tren antigua, Sofía esperaba el tren para regresar a su ciudad. La luz del atardecer iluminaba suavemente los bancos y las paredes de piedra. Ella se sentó junto a una mujer mayor que sostenía un retrato antiguo en sus manos.

Notice the language
Use this pattern to say that one action happens before another action. It is reusable with many verbs and is very common in everyday Spanish. In the story, it appears in a complete sentence: "Antes de irse, le pidió a Sofía que cuidara el retrato por un momento." You can also say: "Antes de salir, cerró la ventana."
Antes de irse, le pidió a Sofía que cuidara el retrato por un momento.
Before leaving, she asked Sofía to look after the portrait for a moment.
