숲 속은 아주 조용했어요. 나는 혼자서 길을 걸었어요.

Notice the language
This ending shows a polite past action or state. It is very common in Korean and works for many simple beginner sentences. In the story you see forms like '걸었어요' and '불었어요'. You can reuse it in sentences like '나는 집에 갔어요.'.
나는 집에 갔어요.
I went home.
