Notice the language
This pattern uses negation followed by بل to correct or sharpen the meaning. The first clause rejects one interpretation, and the second clause gives the real one. It is very useful in narration and explanation when you want to contrast two ideas clearly.
لم يكن خوفًا، بل كان شعورًا غريبًا.
It was not fear, but rather a strange feeling.
