Вместо того чтобы + инфинитив
This pattern means 'instead of doing one thing, do another.' It is reusable in everyday Russian when you want to contrast an expected action with the action that actually happens. The first part uses `вместо того чтобы`, and the verb that follows stays in the infinitive. Example: `Вместо того чтобы спорить, он спокойно всё объяснил.` = 'Instead of arguing, he calmly explained everything.' You can use it in many situations: `Вместо того чтобы ехать на автобусе, я пошёл пешком.` = 'Instead of taking the bus, I walked.'
