Op een rustige ochtend zit Max in de klas. De juf schrijft iets op het bord. Alles lijkt normaal.
Maar dan hoort Max een raar geluid. Het klinkt als trommels, maar er is niemand die speelt. Max kijkt om zich heen, maar iedereen is stil en kijkt naar de juf.
Het geluid wordt harder. Max staat op en loopt naar het raam. Daar ziet hij een groep kinderen buiten. Ze maken muziek met lege potten en stokken. Max lacht en gaat terug naar de klas.
De juf vraagt: "Wie maakt dat geluid?" Niemand antwoordt. Max denkt dat het leuk is. Hij zegt: "De kinderen buiten spelen trommels."
De juf glimlacht. Ze zegt: "Misschien kunnen we later ook muziek maken in de klas."
Max voelt zich blij en nieuwsgierig. De dag gaat door met lezen en schrijven, maar Max kan niet wachten om de trommels te proberen.
Later, als de bel gaat, loopt Max naar buiten. De kinderen stoppen met spelen en lachen naar hem. Max denkt: "School is soms stil, maar buiten is er altijd plezier."

Dutch uses er is for one thing and er zijn for more than one thing. It tells you that something exists or is present. You can reuse it in many simple sentences, such as: "Er zijn kinderen buiten."
