Yo estaba en la playa cuando vi una botella en la arena.
La botella tenía un papel adentro. Era una carta. La carta decía: "Hola, soy Luis y espero que esta carta llegue a alguien especial."
Decidí buscar a Luis para devolverle la carta. Pregunté a las personas en el pueblo, pero nadie conocía a Luis.
Un día, en el café, una mujer me habló. Ella dijo que Luis es su hermano y que hace mucho tiempo escribió esa carta cuando estaba triste.

Spanish often uses estar + adjective for a temporary state or feeling. In the story, 'estaba feliz' means 'was happy.' You can reuse this pattern for feelings and conditions: 'Estoy feliz hoy.'.
