나는 오늘 아침에 우체국에 갔다. 우체국은 내가 살고 있는 동네에서 멀지 않은 곳에 있다. 소포를 보내려고 했는데, 줄이 길어서 조금 기다려야 했다.
내 차례가 오기 전에 옆에 있던 할아버지가 내게 말을 걸었다. 그는 소포를 보내려던 중에 주소를 잘못 적은 것 같다고 했다. 나는 그 말을 듣고 나도 내 소포 주소를 다시 확인했다. 다행히 나는 실수하지 않았다.
하지만 그 할아버지는 점점 당황하는 모습이었다. 직원에게 여러 번 주소를 확인하러 갔지만 문제가 계속 있었다. 결국 그는 자신의 편지를 받고 가야 한다면서 소포를 취소하기로 했다.
나는 그 모습을 보면서 일상에서 작은 일이 큰 스트레스를 줄 수 있다는 생각이 들었다. 그리고 내가 당황했던 적은 얼마나 많았을까 생각했다. 하지만 오늘은 그저 아무 말 없이 할아버지를 바라보기만 했다.
소포를 모두 보내고 나는 밖으로 나왔다. 우체국 앞 벤치에 앉아서 잠시 하늘을 올려다보았다. 햇살은 따뜻했지만 마음 한 켠에는 아직도 그 할아버지 걱정이 남아 있었다. 그는 지금쯤 집에 잘 도착했을까?
돌아가는 길에 나는 작은 친절이 얼마나 중요한지 다시 한 번 생각했다. 오늘은 도와주지 않았지만, 다음에는 더 따뜻한 사람이 될 수 있을까, 그런 생각으로 걷다가 집에 도착했다.
