Today is Jack's birthday. Jack is eight years old.
Jack wakes up early. He thinks about his birthday cake and gifts. He wants a big party with friends.
At school, Jack talks about his birthday. His teacher smiles and says, "We will have a small surprise for you."
Jack feels happy but a little confused. What is the surprise?
After school, Jack goes home. He sees no balloons or gifts. The house is quiet.
Suddenly, his mother calls, "Look outside!"
Jack goes to the window. He sees a small group of people. They smile and sing a song just for him. It is not a big party like he thought.
Jack feels the sun on his face. He hears happy songs and sees friendly faces.
His mother says, "Today is special in a small way, not big."
Jack thinks and smiles. Sometimes small moments can be good too.
Before the sun goes down, Jack enjoys his cake with his family. It is a different birthday than he expected, but it is nice.
Jack goes to bed and dreams of new surprises next year.
